Teen clothing

Prom Dress Shopping at Resale Shops

If your prom is nearing, get start shopping for a dress. But what can you do if money is tight or you are on a limited budget? Resourceful teens head for resale shops, outlet centers and thrift stores to pick up some great prom dresses at great prices.

We followed one teen on a shopping trip in Houston, Texas, on a mission to find a terrific prom dress without spending a fortune.

Elissa's goal was to find an inexpensive dress that would be flattering, stylish, comfortable and different from what other girls would be wearing. Elissa started out at a store that sells new and used clothing. The store was moving to a new location and everything was marked down 50 percent.

Elissa tried on a gothic-style dress that she thought was dramatic and different. The dress was indeed dramatic, however, so tight that she couldn't breathe and not appropriate for a spring prom.

The next stop was truly a resale shop; its proceeds benefited a women's shelter. But no luck there. The selection was limited, and the few dresses available would not do. On to a vintage clothing store. The old, smelly clothes made one think of Miss Haversham. After petting the two store cats, Elissa was out of there.

Across the street at another resale shop Elissa tried on dresses and felt like the three bears: some were too tight; some were too loose; only one was just right. Almost. This dress would require some alteration. On close inspection, the tailoring needed appeared be minimal. The color wasn't what Elissa originally had in mind; it was a pale lilac. However, the dress was flattering, comfortable and indeed stylish. The back of the dress had strings to lace up, a look that was popular. Elissa looked elegant and stylish. And the price was more than right: $50. Still not sure, Elissa put the dress back and called it a day.

The next Friday, Elissa and her mom headed out for another day of shopping. This time they invited Tim, Elissa's prom date, to accompany them. Two resale thrift shops were closed because it was a religious holiday. It often pays to call ahead of time because thrift and resale shops do not keep regular retail hours.

The vast clothing selection at the Salvation Army distracted Elissa from prom dresses; she wound up buying a cute, bright red velour shirt for $4. Even though several formal dresses were available, none were stylish enough.

Another couple of quick stops at resale shops and the crew was beginning to get tired. Stopping for Vietnamese food revived the group for the next round. Elissa went back to try on the lilac dress from the other day. It still didn't look just perfect. At the considerable urging of her mother, Elissa did finally agree to try on a solid black dress with a silver chain as the halter strap.

She looked stunning. Tim just stared. When asked if he liked the dress, all he could do was nod. The dress was backless and had a side leg slit. Elissa looked elegant and she was comfortable. Then we looked at the price tag: $25.00. That's right - $25.00 for a terrific dress.

Strappy heels from PayLess and inexpensive jewelry from Claire's completed the outfit for less than $50. Elissa looked terrific and saved a bunch of money. Well worth the time spent shopping.

Cloths - Redesigning Your Style

If you cannot remember when was the last time you went out shopping for clothes due to your limited budget, perhaps there is a solution for you not to feel "out of fashion" anymore. Transforming clothes was always connected with providing many important functions for human activity. In addition, transformed clothes are a byproduct of creativity and ingenuity. Being a stylish person is not easy. Thus, improving your clothes' demeanor as an act of conscious fashion shift towards contemporary refashioning of secondhand clothing is actually rather progressive. Experiencing the new character of that same old pair of jeans you have bought three years ago, can be the outcome of your dedication to commit some time and renew its old fit. A few cuts, at the right places, some foe crystals on its back pockets, a monogram on the thigh, a gold sparkling textile marker across the waist, are some of the things that can help you transform your used clothing and attract other peoples' attention to your unique style illustrated by your personally crafted fashionable creations.

Additionally, transforming old clothes, in any way, can become your new potential value to another social group. You might even discover a hidden talent while in the process. A number of people, who have begun remodeling or garnishing their clothes due to need or as a new hobby, experienced tremendous success through their hand-made creations and entered the fashion industry from the backstage. The "one-piece" deal is a strong marketing incentive when people need to convey through their clothes the feeling of being different, this need grows worldwide as globalization transcends all known boarders-especially that of fashion. By selling their creations to a variety of clothing stores, or more recently online, these clothes re-crafters reintroduced an old idea, which became an instant urban trend.

Thus, next time you look frustrated the resources you have available in your closet, instead of wasting time and money in trying to figure out what to wear for a night out, why not using your imagination along with some of your other skills to renovate the pieces of your wardrobe that need a little sparkle again to shine? Apart from it being a great idea to spend some quality time alone, redesigning clothes can also open up new career horizons, at least it can amuse you and your friends. Transforming an old skirt into an apron or a pillow case, garnishing your worn-out pants with silver spray suitable for textile painting, altering the length of your old simple black dress, or engraving your initials on your leather bag may be some of the alterations you can perform to your possession and enter a party with a redesigned style. The most important thing is that you will be able to congratulate yourself when one will gaze your looks and admire your stylish appearance. Most importantly, you will know that no fortune was spent on that "unique" piece of clothing you are wearing. Isn't that a sweat deal?

Social status

In some societies, clothing may be used to indicate rank or status. In ancient Rome, for example, only senators were permitted to wear garments dyed with Tyrian purple. In traditional Hawaiian society only high-ranking chiefs wear feather cloaks and palaoa or carved whale teeth. Under the Travancore Kingdom of Kerala, (India), lower caste women had to pay a tax for the right to cover their upper body. In China, before the establishment of the republic, only the emperor could wear yellow. There are numerous examples throughout history of elaborate systems of sumptuary laws regulating what people could wear.

In societies without such laws, which includes most modern societies, social status is instead signaled by the purchase of high cost, rare, or luxury items, the purchase of which are effectively limited to those with the wealth or status to acquire them. In addition, peer pressure may influence clothing choice.
